In Nepal, due to a number of cultural and religious factors, gender discrimination has reached its paroxysm.
Affecting nearly 8 million people throughout the world every year, human trafficking is a serious impediment to human rights in Nepal. Over 12,000 Nepalese (mostly women and young girls) are trafficked to India for sexual exploitation. And nearly 40,000 girls work in underground prostitution sites in the valley of Kathmandu, more than half of whom are supposed victims of trafficking.
The general objective is to fight trafficking and violence against women and children in Nepal, by:
1) Building women’s capacity.
2) Raising awareness and developing a Human Rights culture, fighting gender discrimination.
3) Creating community-based protection mechanisms and enabling access to justice and social reintegration for the victims.
4) Reducing the economic vulnerability of women.
1. Build women’s capacity through the implementation of literacy courses.
2. Create 4 equal protection committees, each counting ten volunteers trained by a social worker: the purpose is to provide shelter to victims of violence or refer them to a hospital or health centre, to the police, lawyers or other community organisations.
3. Create “savings groups”, provide training in market gardening and livestock farming.
4. Implement income generating activities for 60 highly vulnerable women, selected by the protection committee.
At its 17 June 2010 meeting, the Selection Committee of the PPR Corporate Foundation approved a grant of € 20,000 over 2 years.
The expected results are the following:
- 240 women will benefit from training in market gardening and livestock farming.
- 60 highly vulnerable women, selected by the protection committees, will benefit from an income generating activity (IGA).
- Women's groups will meet up regularly with community leaders from 4 towns, in order to include them in the community protection mechanism.
- About 25,000 women and children, living in the 4 targeted towns, will be protected from the risks of trafficking and violence.
The performance indicators are the following:
- Literacy rate in the women's groups.
- Awareness of violence, rights and access to justice among women from the groups and communities.
- Women’s knowledge on market gardening and livestock farming.
- Number of cases of violence and of social and economic support managed by the protection committees.
- Prevalence of trafficking and domestic violence cases.
