- Domestic violence, rape, honor killings, acid attacks and forced marriages are serious problems in Pakistan. Estimates range from 50 to 90% of women having experienced some form of violence.
- Survivors encounter unresponsiveness and hostility at each level of the criminal justice system. Women who leave the home are rejected by their communities and may face retaliation by their own families.
- The Pakistan Interior Ministry has recorded more than 4,100 honour killings since 2001.
The provincial government operates shelters for victims of VAW called Dar-ul-Aman (DUA). The objective of this three-year-project is to provide high quality care to the residents while building the capacity of 35 DUA staff. Médecins du Monde collaborates with the Welfare Protection Department of the Punjab Province, with GTZ, a German development agency and with Rozan, a local NGO.
Activities:
- Work jointly to provide medical care, offer psychosocial and legal support, organise meetings to raise awareness on women's rights, as well as run social and educational activities for children. Development of standardised operating methods and general management guidelines for the Dar-ul-Aman (DUA) centres.
- Train the DUA staff: managers, doctors, psychologists and lawyers.
- Raise awareness among community volunteers and train them to complement the services provided by the DUAs.
- Organise general public awareness campaigns on women's rights.
- Advocacy and lobbying role within the provincial and federal governments.
The PPR Foundation's Board of Directors decided to grant €80,000 to this project, to support training in the DUAs. Part of the transportation, medical and logistical costs are also covered by the Foundation's funding.
Since 2009, The Board of Directors renewed each year the Foundation's support to the Médecins du Monde French NGO's project. In 2011, a grant of €80,000 will contribute to the capacity building training programme in favor of DUAs' staff, to guarantee the security and free access to care to women and their children, in particular trhough partnerships, to coordonnate raising awareness campaigns on violenc against women by a platform of 15 NGOs.
