Dhaka is the fastest growing mega city in the world. Most migrants come from rural areas in search of opportunities and many of them join garment sectors with no skill and little payment. The city is therefore increasingly characterized by large slums, poor housing and lack of security. Failure of public services keeps the urban poor vulnerable and excluded.
Urban poor employment generally depends on low paid jobs. In addition, unhealthy living and working conditions have an implication on the frequency of chronic illnesses. This can be debilitating for the urban poor as illness can have an impact on both their income and productivity. These combined factors make the life of garment workers living in Dhaka ectremely difficult and vulnerable.
The supported project aims at promoting positive health and good sanitation practice through behavioural change communication and outreach-clinic.
The specific objective are::
• To increase understanding of the social and economic issues faced by factory workers, particularly women.
• To ensure provision of quality health services for factory workers specifically in areas of maternal and reproductive health
• to increased workers’ production capacity through better health, hygiene and nutrition practices
Through understanding attitudes to health, CARE will work with factory owners and the Bangladesh Garments Manufactures Export Association to improve the health and sanitation situation.
The following initiatives will be undertaken to reach the objectives:
• Conduct value chain analysis to understand the health behavior and practices of the urban poor. This will be done through questionnaire survey and formative research
• Establish out reach clinics close to the targeted slums for providing quality Essential Health Services including Immunization, Ante Natal Care (ANC), Post Natal Care (PNC), and Skilled delivery services with basic lab facilities. There will be 24 hours referral linkages between out reach clinic and with Ad-din central Hospital in through making available round the clock ambulance services to refer women with emergency obstetric complications, severe illness like child pneumonia, severe diarrhea etc.
• Facilitate in establishing linkages between slum target populations with Ad-din out reach Health clinics
• Work with target communities to develop awareness, promote positive health behaviors and create demand for both preventive and curative health services with especial focus to maternal and child health care.
• Develop operational modalities to provide health services to the urban poor at a subsidized rate.
