There are no specialised institutions in Dakar to care for girls or young women and their children living on the street. They are frequently rejected by their families after being subjected to severe violence (rape, incest, prostitution, forced marriage, early marriage, etc.). In response to this lack of facilities, Mona Chassiero, founder of the association Cour de Femmes in Paris, launched a project designed to create a shelter home for these women. The Maison Rose (or “Pink House”) thus opened its doors in November 2008.
Located in a destitute suburb of Dakar, the Maison Rose provides shelter to adolescent girls, young single mothers and their children, and women victims of severe physical or mental violence, where they receive guidance and support for personal reconstruction and socio-economic reintegration.
The Maison Rose provides shelter to all women and housing for some of the women and their children.
It provides support to help them start small businesses as income generating activities: vegetable cropping, sewing, embroidery, etc.
In partnership with other NGOs, the Maison Rose also organises literacy classes or theatre workshops to help the sheltered women consider their professional future.
Lastly, the association organises awareness meetings focussed on issues linked to women’s vulnerability, in an effort to promote equal opportunities, tolerance and dialogue in the neighbourhood.
At its 20 October 2010 meeting the Selection Committee decided to support the Unies Vers'Elle project with a €5,000 grant.
