When we launched the PPR Foundation for Women's Dignity and Rights, a certain number of well-known figures agreed to join us, thereby bringing all their experience and their authority to the Foundation by taking positions on the Board of Directors. Among these was Waris Dirie.
The film Desert Flower, directed by Sherry Hormann, follows the incredible destiny of a little girl raised in the Somalian desert who becomes one of the most famous top models in the world. It’s also the story of a woman who decided to dedicate her life to fighting female genital mutilation of which thousands of young girls are victims every day.
One of the missions of the PPR Foundation is to put our weight behind efforts to raise awareness about women’s rights. It is in this context that we are involved today in promoting the Desert Flower movie.
I think that first and foremost, this support is a sign of our commitment, and our participation in raising awareness to the greatest possible extent.
François-Henri Pinault, President of the PPR Corporate Foundation

This captivating film traces the life of Waris Dirie, former model and spokes-woman for the fight against female genital mutilation.
Waris Dirie fled Somalia to avoid a forced marriage in her early teens and having suffered all kinds of indignities in London, finally became a model. At the height of her career she publically announced that as a child she had been mutilated – and subsequently gave up her top model career to campaign against FGM (Female Genital Mutilation) which is carried out against 6,000 girls and women worldwide every day.
