Rape is prevalent in Burundi and more than 60% of reported victims are under the age of 18 and 24% are under the age of 10. More than half of the rape cases are committed by family members or neighbours.
Poverty and socio-economic dependence perpetuates the vulnerability of women and girls.
GBV survivors are ostracized by their families and great dependency upon male figures.
The number of GBV cases is growing despite the end of the war. Preventing GBV is not possible without the social and economic empowerment of women.
The IRC is working on 2 other projects:
- with the provincial Department of Social Health to improve the quality of access to clinical care for survivors
- providing technical advice, training, and capacity-building support to enable school-based clubs led by trained teachers to address GBV issues in secondary schools.
The supported project aims at reducing the vulnerability of women to domestic violence in the conflict-affected province of Bujumbura Rurale in Burundi, by expanding VSLA Groups and paired with a GBV intervention.
- Women’s economical empowerment through access to financial services and training on income-generating activities: expand the successful VSLA project by creating 15 additional groups
- Women’s participation status improved in household decision-making, through a discussion group series focused on the contribution of women to the household, constructive communication skills, and the importance of joint decision-making
Activities :
- Mobilize community and form new VSLA groups
- Identify and train community-based facilitators
- Train VSLA Group members
- Saving and lending activities
- Income generating and skills building seminar
- GBV Discussion groups
